Independent learning

At GELI, we understand that everyone learns differently. As GELI students have access to all of the below facilities, they can choose the study method that work best for them. As students can practice their skills in all language areas (reading, writing, speaking and listening) they complete their course with a strong grasp of the English language, ready for the workforce or further study.

ILC facilities include:

  • New computers with high speed internet access
  • iPads with language learning apps
  • IELTS Practice Test materials
  • Subtitled movies
  • Flat screen TV
  • Grammar and vocabulary textbooks
  • Newspapers and magazines
  • Graded readers (popular novels re-written for beginner, intermediate and advanced
    English language students)
  • ESL (English as a Second Language) software
  • Online materials including study apps, podcasts, lecture slides and study programs
  • Collaborative work space
  • Interactive CD’s

Using the ILC is especially important for students who wish to continue their studies at Griffith after completing their English language course. Students can practice self-directed learning, develop their computer and typing skills and familiarise themselves with the Griffith website and Griffith portal all before starting their degree.

Independent Learning Plans

To help students get the most from the ILC, GELI provides independent learning plans to guide students on their independent study. These learning plans can be accessed online and are based around news stories, videos, podcasts and websites that relate to the themes and skills practiced in class that week.

Participating in these additional activities will help students progress faster through their English Language course. Students have access to many hours of independent learning activities however a minimum of 5 hours per week is suggested to consolidate the skills learnt in class.

Weekly Book Club

Book club is a fun way for students to meet friends and improve their reading and comprehension skills. It also gives students an opportunity to practise their speaking skills by discussing the book with their teacher and fellow students.

Book club is held weekly (check the timetable in week 1) in the Independent Learning Centre. Separate meetings are held for beginner, intermediate and advanced students. Students who wish to attend are required to read the assigned book, complete the reading activities and discuss their ideas at the meetings each week.
